Forgive my troubling you with another private letter, but this is a matter which I feel bound to refer to you personally.
It arises out of the Colonial Regulation which prohibits the acceptance of presents by an officer or his family. Most of us run up against this regulation frequently and I have always taken a firm line and refused to accept or to allow my wife to accept anything of the slightest value, except for the most intimate friends - even at the cost of giving serious offence. But I am now in a difficulty. My wife has recently given birth to a daughter. This is the first child born in Government House and so the event has caused some popular interest. A few days after the child was born I was asked whether I would allow the event to be celebrated...
